With Christmastime around the corner, Shannon and I were fortunate to find out that we’ll be heading to Hawaii to swim and hike instead of shovelling snow. In honour of that (and the fact that National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is her family’s favourite holiday movie) here’s our rendition of the Hawaiian classic, Mele Kalikimaka. It features me playing ukulele for the first time on a recording (thanks Mom, for lending me yours!), as well as Shannon making a nice return to being in front of a microphone!

Feliz Navidad – New Christmas song

Or should I say Feliz Skavidad?

What happens when you do a Christmas song with The Seaside Villains? You end up with a super fun punk/ska/reggae version of Feliz Navidad. Odd fact: this is the longest Xmas song we’ve done so far, yet it contains the least lyrics. How does that happen? Serious guitar solos, that’s how. This is part of Dining Room Studios and I’s annual project to record a holiday song with a featured guest.

Go, Tell It On The Mountain

Dining Room Studios and I have a new fun project: every year we’ll record a holiday song that I’ll arrange, produce and coordinate a guest performer to join us. You may remember last year we had Mark Potvin and the Potvin Horns join me for “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”.

This year we went with an old spiritual song “Go, Tell It On The Mountain”, but took a folk approach that quickly turned into folk rock! Of course, it just made sense to get Nick Sherman in as a guest vocalist. We even included a little “Oh Susanna”, which quickly turned into our own recounting of the evening’s events. O Holy Night

I’ve been meaning to record a Christmas song for quite some time now. Finally, I’ve gotten around to it! This is one of my favourites; O Holy Night. I loved singing it with the Thunder Bay Barbershop Chorus, and there are some very powerful versions. However, I changed it up substantially. I started with samples from an a cappella bassline that I time-stretched (originally from some of the “Pitch Pipes” demos), added some salsa/latin/reggae flavour to it, and then laid down the vocals. I kept it to only the first two verses though. I also did what I think was a nifty little solo!

The whole thing was recorded at home, with all the instruments and vocals by me, except for my sister, chiming in on the 2nd verse.
