Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards 2012

As some of you may have heard, some of my work was recognized at the 2012 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards at the end of April.

Performing at the music showcase at The Townehouse

I had a hell of a time, driving down to Sudbury with my good friend Nick Sherman, playing the showcase, the awards, and bringing home the nomination plaques! Not to mention hanging out with some of my new/old friends like Faraway Neighbours, Kalle Mattson, Faye Blais and many, MANY more.

I was nominated for the ‘Best Vocal Performance of the Year’ category for the song Fix from my a cappella EP. You can still download it for free on my soundcloud! I was up against Faye Blais (who took the award) as well as Cindy Doire, two wonderful and deserving singers – they’re touring Canada if not now then soon, so check them out!

Also nominated was Chris Dorota of Dining Studios for engineering my ‘Pitch Pipes’ EP and Piotr Skowronski for editing the ‘You’ music video (he couldn’t make it, unfortunately). Chris is always a classy man, but still the life of the party.

Here are some other photos of the festivities, my performance at the Great Hall as part of the Awards ceremony and a collection of others. A big thanks to everyone at Music and Film in Motion, and I’m looking forward to attending again next year!

NOMFA's 2012

The Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards are upon us!

My EP ‘Pitch Pipes’ has been nominated for 2 awards at the NOMFA’s, held in Sudbury at the end of the month. 1 for the “Best Vocal Performance” category, and “Best Engineer”, which will hopefully be going to Chris Dorota at Dining Room Studios. A third nomination came in to Piotr Skowronski for “Best Film Editor” for the music video for the song ‘You‘. I’ll be updating twitter and facebook throughout the conferences, so you can stay up to speed as to what’s happening, and who the final winners are!

I’ll be performing in Sudbury twice over the weekend as part of the conference and awards:

April 27 – The Townehouse – Music Showcase
April 28 – The Great Hall – Awards Ceremony

More details and ticket links can be found on the Tour page.

If you’re not in Sudbury, you can also find me in Thunder Bay on April 30th at the Unitarian Hall performing with Peter Katz!

April 3rd – Sudbury, ON

Things I love: music, and cheese.

Sudbury had both.

The Fromagerie Elgin was my host, and I’m so thankful to have met such wonderful people, who in turn handed me a platter of cheese and pate. Some of the cheese was even from the Thunder Oaks Cheese Farm just outside Thunder Bay, so it was like a little taste of home.

The concert was presented by River and Sky, which is a wonderful festival and collective of talented and knowledgeable individuals, and I was honoured to have sat in on their meeting before the show began. They’ve got an excellent lineup that they’ll be unveiling in the near future, so please have a look at riverandsky.ca for more info coming soon.

Eric Clancy at Fromagerie Elgin - Sudbury, ON

Eric Clancy was the opening act, accompanied by Chantal for a few songs. What a singer, and songwriter. He had a beautiful voice for quiet folk songs, and lyrically far more mature than his 18 year old contemporaries. He’s recently recorded an album, so you’ll have to wait for that, but it’ll be worth it!

When I took to the stage, I battled with some ongoing technical difficulties, but saved the day by doing the second half of my set completely a cappella! That’s what some folks were looking for anyway, so I indulged them. That, and I even jumped up on the tables for the grand finale. Thanks Sudbury, for being a wonderful end to the Year of the Loop tour. I’ll see you in a few weeks for the NOMFA’s.
